A

NEW landmark at Angono, Rizal, in the Philippines, is a three- storey structure of fairface concrete, known as the Loyola Retreat House

a Jesuit retreat convent.

Designed for the use of priests and laymen, the building stands on a seven-hectare hilly site near the Nieves Hills Subdivision and com- mands a panoramic view of Laguna de Bay.

The site is about 220 ft. above the national road traversing from Taytay to Angono town proper and is 29 kilometers from Manila,

In designing the building, the ar chitect followed the Jesuit "Instruc- tio" which calls for "a simplicity be fitting its Religious function." The Instructio states: "Simplicity per- mits a chaste and pleasing architec- tural beauty which may help to

elevate the mind to God and heaven- ly things, and allow us to make our houses attractive instead of barrack- like

the architectural style should be a bit more austere.

How- ever, these buildings should be attrac- tive, not grim and forbidding."

The Jesuit Instructio also calls for a building providing "shelter and ample space for prayer and medita tion in an atmosphere of solitude and silence

solidly constructed conducive to good health forming with our poverty
