Kwun Tong industrial area of Kowloon, Hong Kong, exemplifies efficient industrial architecture, where- by the accommodation is designed to provide a smooth flow of the produc- tion processes while thought is also given to the external appearance of the buildings themselves.
The site, a dominant one fronting the first traffic circle of the industrial area, is bounded by three streets
Kwun Tong Road to the north east, Lai Yip Street to the north west and Hung To Road to the south west. Its northern boundary forms a large curve at the intersection of Kwun Tong Road and Lai Yip Street. The total area of the site is 60,940 sq. ft.
The building owners, General Bot- tling Co., Ltd., who bottle popular brands of soft drinks, bought the site from Government specifically house their growing manufacturing and sales operations.

tects and their complex requirements were analysed into the following ma- jor points: 1. Manufacturing; 2. storage; 3. circulation and transporta- tion: 4. sales operation; 5. offices; 6. staff and workers welfare; and 7. public relations.
A layout for the plant was then devised to provide a continuous work- ing process through the various stages of soft drink manufacture ingre-
dients preparation, blending, bottling. storage and trucking.
Ample area is left for parking and loading/unloading of delivery vehicles which is a vital operation in this kind of factory. The large loading area is directly connected to the bottle
store.
Steel framework is used for the bottle store, which has a floor area of about 20.000 sq. ft. Steel trusses span 47 ft. in one direction at a clear height of 20 ft.
All other parts of the building are of high grade reinforced concrete construction. Due to the large area of the building, three expansion joints are provided to allow for any move- ment due to extreme temperature changes.
A total of 154 Colcrete piles were driven to an average depth of 90 ft. to support the structure.
