NEW CONTRACTOR'S

COMPACTOR

Percussive Unit is Petol Driven

minute by

BLOWS of 1,000 lb. are delivered at the rate of 700 a a petrol operated earth compactor which has been developed by Thor Power Tool Co.. Aurora, Ill., USA. A percussive-type unit, it can be used on both cohesive and granular soils. A centrifugal clutch makes opera- tion almost automatic. The clutch will not engage at idle speed. Once the pounding plate is engaged at a higher speed, weight distribution of

Thor GT-6 compactor the compactor propels the machine forward only when the soil has been sufficiently tamped to form a firm base from which the machine can "jump".

The operator serves mainly as a fulcrum, while a shock-absorber system protects him and the four- cylinder engine from repercussions.

Features of the unit the GT-6

include a simple method of re- moving and replacing the rubber bellows, a threaded assembly for easy adjustment and one-spot lubrication.

The Far East area manager for the Thor Co. is Mr. Robert Harrison, PO Box 125. Manila, Philippines.

PILE DRIVER

Sinks or Extracts in Non-cohesive Soils

PILE DRIVING or extracting works in non-cohesive soils such as sand. silt and gravel can now be carried out almost noiselessly and at speed with equipment developed by Pro- cedes Techniques de Construction, 9 Place des Ternes, Paris.

PLANT

The PTC Vibrofonceur is essen- tially a powerful vibrator with two or four parallel contrarotating eccentric shafts, The vibration is transmitted lengthwise to the pile by means of a hydraulic jack clamped to its head. Rotation of the eccentric shafts is by two electric motors mounted оп springed frames so that they do not vibrate themselves.

On the same springed frames is the hydraulic system for the jack. A control cabinet contains the electric control and safety devices, and all operations are directed from a push- button portable panel.

Vibrofonceurs need no guiding. being hung from the loadline of a crane. There are several models to suit a variety of soil conditions and pile shapes.

The three main types are: the 2-17 (34 h.p.. 3 tons): 2-35 (70 h.p.. 5 tons); and 2-50 (100 h.p., 6 tons). As a general rule, the driving of thin edge piles sheet piling, open ended steel tubes, or H-bearing piles can be performed with a 2-17 when the pile weighs up to 0.8 ton, with a 2-35 when the pile weighs from 0.8 to 2 tons, and with a 2-50 when it is over 2 tons.

The makers are represented in Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong, but have no agents in Malaysia, the Philippines and Borneo.

Asian market and are ready to ap- point agents here if there are good sales possibilities.

The Gell system comprises a few basic form elements which can be combined in many different wall formations. Elements and forma- tions can be repeatedly used.

Steel plate of 3mm thickness is used for the forms and steel channels on the outside act as vertical stiffeners.

The basic units are 1m. wide, but narrower elements are provided to make the wall to a desired length. Several basic units and a narrow piece are bolted to four horizontal walings to form a wall shutter of any length up to 9m. Adjacent wall ele- ments are joined with angle strips secured to the walings with cotter pins. Lugs at the end of the angle strips engage the waling to position the elements so that the inside sur- face is smooth and well aligned.

CORE DRILL Five Speeds for up

14 in. to Bits

A DIAMOND core drill said to cut cleanly into the toughest reinforced concrete has been developed by the

Clipper DA-40 drill

Sydney firm of Clipper (Australia) Pty., Ltd. Called the Clipper DA- 40, it has five speeds: 370 r.p.m. for drilling diameters between 6in. and 14in.: up to 605 r.p.m., 926, 1,325 and 1,925 r.p.m. for 1in. diameter and smaller.

а

Five speed reduction pulleys, centrifugal clutch and an eccentric counter shaft are used.

It is a flexible shaft unit, powered by a Mark 15 Villiers engine, with positive-acting end

end couplings for fast assembly. The drill head swivels through 360 degrees and the unit may be used on its stand or may be hand- held for difficult locations.

The stand base is cast iron and has four levelling screws. Three bubble levels are mounted

on the drill for horizontal and vertical drilling.

A rack and pinion-type feed me- chanism allows a 20in. bit travel.
