changing room, modifications to the showers including the relocating of all piping behind the wall, and the provi- sion of lockers of a new design, a false ceiling and additional lighting.

Better showers and lockers have been installed in the ground floor changing rooms and a new mezzanine changing room has been formed to in- clude a sauna and shower area. Spike- proof carpeting has been laid in these rooms as well as in the newly con- structed men's main club bar which is wood-panelled and air-conditioned.

Other work has included the provi- sion of a new men's quiet room, a bil- liard room, the relocation of the main bar and updating of the mixed lounge and spike bar. The existing mixed din ing room and mixed lounge have been converted into a new and larger main dining room with new furniture, cur- taining, carpeting and air-conditioning.

At ground level in the new swim- ming pool complex are a 25 metre pool, an angled diving area, an inter- mediate swimming pool and a child- ren's paddling pool, changing rooms, pool-side bar and snack service coun- ter, offices, a barbecue facility and a surround with tables and umbrellas.

Also at this level are a sun-deck, walkway to the existing clubhouse and eight additional combination family suites, capable of conversion into single rooms.

Completing the facilities are 20 air- conditioned bedrooms which have been constructed as a second floor ex- tension to the existing club house.

In order to achieve the maximum in extra accommodation within a limited budget, the standard

standard of finishes and decoration used was kept as simple and as durable as possible. An example is the polypropylene car- pet laid on the majority of floors which is hard-wearing and spike-re- sistant.

Externally, on the new extensions, mosaic tile has been used extensively with an eye to minimising future main-

tenance costs.

The result of this modernisation programme is to give the nineteenth at

the Royal Hong Kong Golf Club an atmosphere of gay informality far re- moved from the institutional environ- ment often associated with the game. The club can now boast that its off- course facilities are on a par with any links anywhere.

Contractors

The main contractors were Kow Lee Building Construction Co. and the building time was approximately 18 months.
