ferent elements possibly including beams, flat and curved plates, hollow metal stiffeners and other types of reinforcement. At the university, the car would be mathematically dissected and the library of elements, allied to the computer, would be used to calculate the stress in each part individually when the car was subjected to some prescribed load.

The broad-based nature of the programs per- mits calculations to be made in this way not only on cars but also, to give other examples of current projects, structures as diverse as buildings and air- craft parts.

Tender documents guide

A guide for the use of quantity surveyors and other professionals concerened with the prepara- tion of tender documents based on bills of quanti- ties for engineering services in buildings, has been published by the Royal Institute of Chartered Sur- veyors.

The guide is produced by the technical working party of the RICS Engineering Services Committee and sets out in some detail the working party's recommendations on the format of the appropriate tender documents. It reviews the various standard forms of contract or sub-contract available, and where considered necessary, offers suitable amend- ments to some of the conditions.

It also lays down the general requirements of the contract preambles and preliminaries bill by setting out in a recommended sequence a specimen set of preamble headings, stating what needs to be conveyed under each heading in order that the esti- mator when tendering may properly assess a realis- tic offer. The report finally sets out the recom- mended order of billing mechanical services instal- lations in order that the maximum information may be obtained for subsequent cost analysis.

In his foreword to the report, A. T. Brett-Jones, FRICS, chairman of the quantity surveyors' com- mittee, says that the increasingly prominent part played by bills of quantities for engineering ser- vices contracts is a welcome development, not only because of the help they give to tenderers but also for the improved communication of cost data.

Lahore Hilton planned

The construction of a 200-room hotel in the city of Lahore, Pakistan, has been announced by Avari Hotels Ltd. and Hilton International. Expect- ed to be completed in 1973, the Lahore Hilton will be built on the site of the present Park Luxury Hotel. It will be a low-rise building with extensive gardens, pools and fountains.

Architects for the hotel are Candilis, Josic, Woods of France, in co-operation with Hilton In- ternational's department of architecture and in- terior design.
