ROOF PROTECTION
A fibreglass-reinforced aluminium roof system that resaturates, protects and aluminizes in a single-step appli- cation has been introduced by The Monroe Co., Inc., 10792 Quebec Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
Plasti-Dek aluminium contains sili- cones, plasticizers, fibreglass strands and aluminium particles. It is sprayed or spread on with a brush or squeegee. Its brightness improves through ex-

posure to sunlight and by reflecting the rays of the sun, it reduces under- roof temperatures by up to 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
CEILING SYSTEM
A suspended ceiling system based on a 4in. (101.6mm) or a 6in. (152.4-mm) module to suit a wide range of tiles or other claddings, com- bines quick fixing with a high degree of fire protection.
It is offered in table widths (sup- porting width of the cross beams) of either 1.37 in. (35 mm) or 0.98 in. (25 mm) so that the most economical design can be selected to suit the loadings. The 25 mm system will cater for all conventional requirements and the 35 mm system is for installations incorporating lighting and heating panels.
Developed by George Whitehouse and Co. (Birmingham) Ltd., Worcester Road, Kidderminster, UK., the system has withstood more than two hours under British Standard test. With a furnace temperature of 1000°C, over- head structural beam mean tempera- ture was restricted to 350°C.
A considerable degree of thermal expansion is provided for in the design to reduce flame spread due to struc- tural failure. This is achieved by using a non-flammable fusible stop which melts under fire conditions. Further protection can be provided by using a mastic sealing compound around the perimeter trim to prevent the flame spreading up the walls to above the ceiling system.
Both the systems are fully inter- locking and are manufactured from 26 swg (0.475 mm) pre-painted, hot- dipped galvanised steel for protection against rust.
CALCULATOR
A Japanese company has produced a sophisticated calculator with a 15 digit calculating and display capacity and two 15 digit memory registers.

RAINWATER SYSTEM
The rigid p.v.c. Merex rainwater system offers a choice of 3,4 and 5in. gutter sizes, together with a corres- ponding range of 2, 21⁄2 and 3in. down pipes.
Gutter components in the range
connecting brackets, angles and stop- ends. There are also nozzle and drop- end fittings which fulfil the same functions as the connecting brackets and stop-ends except that each in- corporates a full-bore spigot outlet in the base, designed to fit into the socket end of a down-pipe.
Return flanges on the top edges of all fittings hold the gutter lengths in place, rigid back supports on all except the narrow support bracket and stop- end give extra strength to the canti- levered construction, and integral fix- ing tabs on the sides of the fittings make provision for screwing them to a fascia board.
Vertical stops on the inside edge of the nozzle and drop-end fittings control gutter expansion, making it impossible for any gutter length to shift sideways over an outlet hole. Two expansion nibs, situated in the centre of each connecting bracket under the return flanges on both sides, ensure that the correct expansion gap is always left during the installation of adjacent gutter lengths.

ELEVATOR
An unusual elevator system was recently put into service at the new Nagoya Castle in Nagoya City, Japan. Designed for outdoor operation, the elevator car has floor-to-ceiling win- dows on three sides to give passengers a view of the surroundings.
Instead of operating in an indoor shaft, like conventional elevators, the new system rides on a pair of rails which are recessed into an outer wall of the hotel. Tail cords and governor
ropes are tucked under cover to give a neat appearance.
