THE narrow strip of land on which stands the new cement-bagging and ready-mix concrete complex of the Green Island Cement Co. Ltd. has a frontage of only 76 ft. on the Western District waterfront.

It is located in one of the most congested areas of Hong Kong where provision cargoes unloaded from Main- land junks cause a virtual blockage of the waterfront road.

On this site the architects were set the unenviable task of producing a scheme which would incorporate a ready-mix plant with silo storage for cement; material handling facilities offshore, a large amount of rentable storage space; and materials handling facilities for the warehouses within the

building. Additionally they were asked to allow the best possible access.

The scheme adopted meets all these requirements by providing a 14-storey building, a jetty for loading material from barges, and access to the building at both first floor and ground floor levels.

The reinforced concrete framed building is founded on bored piles, 4, 5 and 6ft. in diameter, designed for individual loading up to 1,300 tons.

The jetty, which is 350ft. long and 76ft. wide, is a two-tier structure over most of its length and three-tier at the extreme end where the pump house is sited. Adjacent to the water front two lifts of 30-ton capacity are provided for truck access to the building from a

bridge spanning the main waterfront road.

The most interesting feature of the project is the reinforced concrete con- veyor housing for material handling. It rises from the end of the jetty to the eighth floor of the building, 114ft. above road level. The housing is pre- cast in 5ft. and 10ft. sections, the larger size weighing 14 tons and mea- suring 7ft. square on the inside.

These units were erected on false- work and post-tensioned to provide two clear spans of 160ft. and 150ft.

Sand and aggregate, fed on to a 30in. conveyor belt inside the housing by a 9-ton capacity grab crane, are transported to silos from supply barges for the batching plant at a rate of 250 tons an hour.

In the pump house three 200 h.p. compressors facilitate the pneumatic conveyance of cement to both batch- ing and bagging plant storage silos via six 4in. diameter pipe lines run on the top of the conveyor housing.
