EXCAVATOR

Hydraulically Operated, Fully Revolving Superstructure

HYDRAULIC on all digging motions, the ST 804 4 cu. yd. capacity ex- cavator now being made by Thomas Smith and Sons (Rodley) Ltd., Rodley, Leeds, UK, may be operated as a trencher, face shovel or grab.

A 53 b.h.p. air-cooled Lister diesel engine driving a high pressure twin hydraulic pump from the "front" end of the engine with a clutch and flywheel power take-off, through a reverse drive and five speed gearbox, provides hydraulic power for digging and orthodox drive for travelling. The drive to the twin wheels is by propeller shafts through differentials, mounted above simple solid beam axles, and finally by half shafts to a gear reduction unit in each wheel hub. This arrangement enables lightly loaded differential units incor- porating eight disc brakes to be used and provides the best possible ground clearance under the axles.

The wheels are fitted with twin tyres which have the tread patterns opposed for maximum wheel to ground adhesion, and the disc brakes provide ample braking power for the steepest gradients. Steering is hy- draulically powered, incorporating a simple device for steering correction, enabling the machine to be driven equally well in either direction through its five-speed gearbox.

A stabiliser in the form of a bulldozer blade is fitted, this being mounted ahead of the pivoted non- steering axle. The dozer blade, which is pivoted, has a dual purpose and can be used either as a bulldozer for clearing the working site, or as a stabiliser which will automatically level itself, under hydraulic power, to any ground slope.

The fully revolving superstructure is mounted on a totally enclosed slewing ring to absorb the digging forces, and the slewing is by radial

hydraulic motor. The digging equip. ment comprises a two piece boom, ex- tendable to suit the prevailing digging conditions, either a short or long bucket arm and a choice of buckets for trenching or face shovel excava- tion.

DUMP TRUCK

Maximum Payload of 12,000 lb.

A DUMP truck with a heaped cap- acity of 4.57 cu. yd. has been added to the range made by Aveling-Barford Ltd., Grantham, UK. Known as the SY 6, it has a maximum payload of 12,000 lb.

Standard equipment includes 14.00 x 24 12 ply earthmover tyres on the rear (driving) wheels: cab protec- tion plate; and hydraulically operated 151⁄2 in. x 6 in. internal expanding, two leading shoe brakes fitted to drive wheels with Hydrovac power boost system.

The power unit is the Ford 2701E four-cylinder diesel engine, which de- velops 67 b.h.p. at 2,250 r.p.m. Drive is transmitted via a dry, single plate 13 in. diameter clutch, through a five- speed gearbox which has synchromesh on the four higher speeds, and thence by propeller shaft to the drive axle. The integral forward and gearbox makes the full range avail- able in both directions.

resistant alloy steel plate, bottom of % in, and front and sides of 5 16 in.

Hydraulic tipping is by two 21⁄2 in. bore double-acting rams, power being supplied by a gear type pump driven by the engine crankshaft. Tipping time for a fully laden body through a 70 degree angle is four seconds.

CRANE

Truck-mounted Equipment Will Lift 12,500 lb.

THE boom is saddle-mounted around an offset boxed turret on a new truck-mounted hydraulic crane, the Loadrunner, developed by RO Products, Inc., Olathe, Kansas, USA. The rigidity of the box design eliminates fatique failures and pro- vides a solid support for the boom.

The offset turret combined with an 80-degree boom elevation allows loads to be placed close against the main- frame. Hydraulic tank, control valves and control rods are located within the mainframe. Outriggers are fitted and the winch is boom-mounted.

Driving through planetary gears into a winch worm gear box, the hydraulic motor gives positive loading control. Lifting capacity is 12,500

lb. reverse

A single steering wheel provides a turning radius of 16 ft. 3 in. Acceler- ator, brake and clutch pedals are duplicated for two-way driving, the brake and clutch pedals being hy- draulically oper- ated. A change speed lever and a forward/reverse lever control the transmission.

The chassis frame, comprises 6 in. x 3 in. chan- nel side members which are cross- braced and weld- ed to form rigid structures of great strength. The body

The Loadrunner has an outreach of 36 ft. 9in. with jib. Boom and turret are supported by a shear ball rotation mechanism, Further information is available from Henry R. Jahn and Son, Inc., 95 Broad Street, New York.
