Another example of modern church architecture is under construction in Quezon City, Philippines. The Catholic Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Cubao, designed by architect Cesar V. Canchela, has exterior walls built on different axes and converging towards the altar to allow maximum vision for overflow crowd in the outer corridors.

ARCHITECT HONOURED

HONG KONG architect Mr. Li Hin-lung, FRIBA, was made a Member of Order of British Empire for his service to the community in the New Year's honours list.

Mr. Li, 54, was the first Chinese to become a Fellow of the RIBA. He graduated from Liverpool University in 1936. Since 1938 he has been architect to the Chinese Temples Committee.

He is well known in the Colony for his devotion to charity. In 1952-53 he was a director of the Tung Wah Hos- pital an organisation de- dicated to charity. Three free hospitals, free schools, and free burials are some of the services offered to the poor.

From 1954-56 he was a dir- ector of Pok Oi Hospital a similar organisation. Other charitable institutions in which he takes on active part are the Committee San Wui Commercial Society of H.K.; Executive committee Sye Yap Commercial and Industrial Association; and Five District Business Association.

Mr. Li, a dedicated architect and community worker, is also a member of the Tenancy Tribunal.

TEN-YEAR PLAN

TAIWAN'S Provincial Bureau of Public Works has pre- pared a ten-year plan for developing urban projects and public utilities on the island at a cost of NT$5 billion.

It envisages the expansion and modernisation of 30 existing city communities and the building of 80 new communities and 30 new industrial zones. It also calls for the renovation of over 21 million sq. meters of old road and the construction of 24 million sq. meters of new road in heavily populated areas. Some NT$459 million is listed for new waterworks and NT$1,467 million for sewerage systems.

TALLEST FLATS

THE residential stellite town of Toa Payoh is to have the tallest flats in Singapore. Several blocks up to 25 storeys high are planned by the Housing and Develop- ment Board.

Toa Payoh will include four estates with a total of 35,000 housing units. Each neighbourhood will have its own shopping centre and other communal facilities such as markets, clinics, theatres, restaurants, community centres and schools.

Total cost of the project is estimated at M$150

BANGKOK HOTEL

FOUNDATIONS are complete and construction is now un- der way on a new 224-room hotel, the Hotel Siam In- tercontinental, which is being built within the Srapatum Palace property in Bangkok.

Bangkok Intercontinental Hotels Co., Ltd, have leased a site of 70 rai and are to spend over US$5 million on the hotel and a modern shopping area. The hotel will consist of a main pavilion housing the public spaces and utilities and two two-storey buildings containing the bedrooms. The main pavilion will be 26 metres high with a steep roof in the Thai tradition.

In addition the layout will include a garden, swimming pool and a terrace. The hotel will be fully air-condi- tioned and will contain a water purification system.

Intercontinental Hotels Corporation of America are supervising the construction and decoration of the hotel.
