In order to handle the various strength requirements for different heights of Fabridams a range of fabric constructions has been devel- oped. The basic difference between the constructions is the strength usually determined by the quantity of fabric plies laminated into a sheet. The table below shows several stan- dard constructions and some of their physical properties:

tion of fabric plies. In its inflated operational state with water over- topping carrying sand and debris, its functioning compares physically to that of a tyre running at a moderate speed on a rough road. Because of its lower inflation pressure it is more resilient than a tyre, enabling a high rate of deflection of foreign materials, resulting in less damage.

The inflation cycle is a simple and reliable one. Regardless of whether the inflation medium is water or air, storage tanks can be installed adja- cent to the Fabridam with sufficient capacity to ensure complete inflation whenever required. Many alternate methods and sources can be utilised in water inflation, such as gravity flow, artesian wells, or forced feed by pumping. In the case of air, a

unit. In this manner, by installing separate controls to each unit, a greater flexibility of control can be attained.

Another useful appliclation of the Fabridam is the fact that is can be placed on top of existing dams to increase reservoir capacity or, in the If concrete abutments are not case of power schemes, to increase wanted, individual segments can be the potential head available.

Asphalt Surface on all Thailand Roads

ALL highways in Thailand will have an asphalt surface under a five-year plan by the Government's Highways Department.

During 1965 the department plans to have work started on eight high- ways in South Thailand. Contractors have been named for three of these and the other awards are imminent.

The schemes include:

metres. United Engineering Co., 21,944,686 baht. Completion period two years.

At Tai Po Tau the dam is fastened in place to a reinforced concrete slab and foundation with structural steel members and anchor bolts.

Heights

The present height limitation for a Fabridam is approximately 20 ft. However, new materials in the de- velopment stages will allow 30 ft. heights in the near future. While

there is no limitation on lengths, from the standpoint of economics in shipping and handling during instal- lation, units would not normally ex- ceed 400-500 ft, in length.

When requirements call for longer dams the procedure is to use vertical concrete abutments between each

A CONTRACT worth M$2,326,000 has been awarded to Salvage Engineers, Ltd. for straightening the mile-long winding Kallang River and Sungei Whampoa in Singapore.

The realignment is part of the $25 million Kallang reclamation scheme which will yield 300 acres of land for development. When the Kallang river is re-channelled, it will run in a straight line from Serangoon, join up with Sungei Whampoa near Ar- thur Bridge in Geylang and flow in- to the sea at Merdeka Bridge.

The scheme entails dredging at several places and

places and building con- crete walls on both sides in order to prevent erosion.

Reclamation work in Kallang started about seven months ago, and

by the

end of last year about 80 acres had been reclaimed. The Housing and Development Board had spent about $5,000,000 on re- clamation by the end of last year.

Progress on the scheme is linked with the progress of developing Toa Payoh as a satellite township. The Board has built a temporary road from Tao Payoh to Kallang to transport earth to the reclamation site.

Construction tenders for the Muda River Project in Malaya, described in the January issue, are now being invited by the consulting engineers, Sir William Halcrow and Partners. See advertisement page 66.
