Belgian Black and Nero Margina black marble slabs clad the ground floor facade and columns in the theatre foyers. The foyers and arcade floors are of Travertine mar- ble and walls in the arcades are faced in dark granite.

The foyers and waiting rooms are well lighted with fluorescent strips concealed above rectangular and cir- cular translucent ceiling panels. This lightness is enhanced by the use of sky-blue and cream emulsion paint on the walls and white on the ceilings.

In the theatre, teak panelling is used generally to a height of 7 ft. and above this is a beige fibre glass material is glued and pinned to the walls up to ceiling height. The theatre ceiling and balcony soffit are finished in a dark blue-green emulsion paint.

Aluminium window walls are de- signed by Cupples Products Corpora- tion of St. Louis, Missouri, USA, with natural extrusions in aluminium 6063-T5 alloy supplied by Aluminum Co. of America

The total area of aluminium win- dow wall is approximately 25,000 sq. ft., consisting of window units mea- suring 4 ft. by 8 ft. with over 10,000 ft. run of decorative aluminium mullions.

Each window unit is made up of five fixed window panels and one "operational" window for ventilation and for cleaning purposes. The win-

Accommodation for 6,000 people will be provided in the grandstand, which will be 750 ft. long. The structural span of each truss will exceed 180 ft.

It will be on the same site as the existing grandstand which will con- tinue to be used as demolition and rebuilding is done in stages. The new stand will have а total area of

a tower.

Ground floor installations include a tote hall (for off course betting and standing spectators), restaurants, bars and offices.

Concourse

The main tote hall on the first floor is linked by a wide concourse run- ning the full length of the grand- stand. Main seating and stand ac- commodation is ramped down to the viewing lawns in front of the stand.

The VIP and private box accom- modation, including stewards, press and broadcasting, are on the second floor which is reached by lifts from ground level. The tower houses the judge's box and photo finish room,

Structure of the grandstand is a combination of in situ concrete and precast units. The in situ concrete is reinforced and, in some cases, post- tensioned after the application of loading from secondary elements.

Inverted T-beams along the main roof areas are constructed as pairs of balanced cantilevers with a post- tensioned tie above the beam.

The plan incorporates two central refrigeration plants to provide chilled water for circulation to the areas to be air conditioned. Mechanical ven- tilation of the grandstand on still days will be achieved by distributing air from side wall registers in duct- work located under the VIP boxes.

View towards the stage from the near of the auditorium dow units have been designed to withstand a wind pressure of 80 lb. per sq. ft.
