together with greatly increased foyer and additional waiting spaces, helps to relieve the present pavement con- gestion on Queen's Road and pro- vides three floors of shop spaces ground, first and second almost the entire site.

Two levels of arcades allows flexi- bility in the planning of the shop spaces; these are let either as single units or are grouped into department

stores.

While the main cinema foyer is on the Wyndham Street side, it is not inconvenient for people entering the An building at Queen's Road. escalator is installed to serve the upper arcade and to provide access to the foyer.

For patrons to the auditorium and the circle, waiting spaces served by escalators, are above the main foyer.

Another large foyer for the front stalls is on the D'Aguilar Street side. On this frontage the lower portion of the building is set back and the upper portion is cantilevered out to the boundary limit. This is done to conform with the Government's pro- jected road widening scheme for D'Aguilar Street. In the meantime it

allows an 8 ft. strip of land to be merged into the public footpath.

A basement below the level of Queen's Road extends over most of the site. A central air conditioning plant is put at this level and the remainder of the area 8,170 sq.ft. is planned as a restaurant and night club.

Open Layout

The shopping arcades provide a total of 18,909 sq.ft. of accomoda- tion and the offices, from the third to the nineteenth floor, have a total floor area of 46,281 sq.ft. Flexibility is again aimed at in the office design. An open layout is used to allow each floor to be partitioned as small units or for a company taking whole floors.

In addition to a service lift the front block is served by four pas- senger lifts arranged in two banks. The lift lobbies to each bank of lifts are separately located so that access to the upper floors can be had from either side of the building.

To provide ample natural light to the office floors and to reduce the deadweight of the structure alum-

inium curtain walling has been used to enclose the front block. The shop fronts have aluminium framed show- cases incorporated into the building to preserve uniformity of appearance and to avoid piecemeal installation by the tenants.

The cinema is a rectangular struc- ture 90 ft. high and covering an area of 7,200 sq.ft. The balcony and roof
