end of New Kowloon on the proposed motorway connecting Kowloon with the industrial areas of Cheung Sha Wan, Tsuen Wan and Castle Peak. The new Laichikok road bridge is now under construction.

A multi-lane bus terminus and interchange is planned within the central area and a ferry service to other points in the harbour will be initiated.

According to the developers the tower blocks have been grouped in such a way to provide the best use of the site for recreation and for pedestrian and traffic circulation there will be some 120,000 sq. ft. of open space in the first stage.

cular traffic and it will be possible for a resident to walk through the whole area without crossing a street.

First Stage

Car parking space will be laid out below the podium and beneath some of the buildings. The ratio is one parking space per nine flats but fur- ther parking areas are expected to become available beneath the new bridge at a later date.

The first stage cent. of the total development scheduled for completion in 1968. Working drawings are now being finalised. Piling for the first phase of buildings is under way by Franki Piling and Engineering (HK) Ltd.

There will be 14 tower blocks in the first stage: 1,823 flats to house

some 10.000 people. The total floor space will be 1.75 million sq. ft., which includes 30.000 sq. ft. for 30 shops. A primary school of 24 class- rooms to serve 2.000 pupils in two daily sessions is also to be erected: the design has already been approved by the Education Department.

The first stage will itself be divided into three phases of five, five and four blocks, starting at three-monthly in- tervals. Conventional in situ rein- forced concrete construction will be used, though in later stages it is pos- sible that precast units will be em- ployed particularly on partition walls. of which there are some 1.3 million sq. ft. in the first stage.
