Insurance Building Wins Award for Original Design

In the annual awards programme of the Prestressed Con- crete Institute of America a first award for ingenious and imaginative structual design has been given for the 12- storey North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance headquar- ters building in Durham, N.C.

Precast, prestressed concrete Vierendeel trusses com- prise the entire exterior structural system of the building. Truss top and bottom chords and verticals were precast in separate units, transported to the site, raised to work- ing level, threaded on steel tendons, and post-tensioned.

Prestressed double tee floor units span in opposite directions on alterate floors so that each two-storey truss carries only one floor. Each truss cantilevers 33 ft. at each end.

Breathalyser Tests for Hungarian Builders

As part of a campaign for work safety, on-site breathaly- ser tests are being introduced in Hungary by the Ministry of Building in agreement with the Building and Building Materials Trade Union.

Drivers and machine operators, and those working at a height, will be regularly tested from January 1, and anyone found to have taken drink will be laid off for the day, while repeated offences may bring disciplinary action or a compulsory "cure."
