COMPACT BACKHOE
A compact backhoe designed for confined working conditions under which comparatively large machines cannot function properly, has been in- troduced by a Japanese manufacturer. Called the Hinomoto, it is fitted with a 14 hp gasoline engine. The digging depth is 1800 mm (71 in) and the
bucket capacity 0.04 m3. As it has a small build, the machine can turn 360 degrees in a 43-inch radius. The tyres have extra deep lugs to avoid slip. For long-distance transport it can be lifted onto a truck of 1.5 to 2 ton capacity. For further information, please write to Toyosha Co. Ltd., 55, Joshoji-16, Kadoma City, Osaka 571, Japan.
CONCRETE MIXER TRUCK
A new 6 m3 capacity concrete mixer truck has been added to the range of four lightweight vehicles made by a British firm. A virtually complete interchangeability of parts across the range makes the carrying of fleet spares simple and cheap. Wider than normal feed and discharge chutes are fitted for fast discharge. Each of the five models is available with diesel engine or hydraulic power take off drive to the drum. On diesel drive

machines, power is supplied by a water-cooled 4-cylinder engine with a rating of 71 bhp at 2,500 rpm. The hydraulic drive mixer uses two fixed displacement pumps, the first in per- manent connection with the vehicle engine and the second driven from the gearbox. The controls are at the rear of the machine so that the opera- tor can handle concrete discharge from the best vantage point. Other models in the range are of 4, 4, 5 and 51⁄2 m3 capacity. The manufacturers are Sto thert & Pitt Ltd., P.O. Box 25, Lower Bristol Road, Bath, Somerset, England.
AIRLESS SPRAY MACHINE
The Hotliner, a new pedestrian- controlled airless spraying machine, cuts the cost of road marking by spraying hot paint which dries in 11⁄2 to 2 minutes, thus avoiding the exten- sive use of traffic cones to protect long sections of newly marked road. A fur- ther advantage is that traffic conges- tion on busy roads is reduced. The machine incorporates a new system for applying Ballotini beads which are used to make the lines reflective. Beads are air-ejected on to the painted

lines at a controlled rate instead of being gravity fed in the conventional way. The rate of application is control- led by the speed of the machine, so
that the recommended rate of cover- age is maintained.
The Hotliner has been developed specifically for use with Cataphos Hotline 120, a hot spray paint pro- duced by Berger Traffic Markings which is applied at 100°F to 130°F (43°C to 54°C) to bitumen, hot rolled asphalt or concrete surfaces. Other types of hot spray paint, as well as cold materials, can also be applied by the machine which has a connection point for a hand spray gun. A 300 cc four-stroke petrol engine propels the machine at 100 ft (30 m) per minute whilst marking, and drives a compres- sor supplying air for the paint-spraying and circulating pump. The manufac- turers are Berger Traffic Markings Ltd., Berger House, Berkeley Square, London W1, U.K.
SIDE-STEER DUMPER
A 2-ton four-wheel-drive dumper, manufactured by Barfords of Belton Ltd., Belton, nr. Grantham, Lincs., has been developed for operation in re- stricted areas such as narrow-headed tunnels where it is not possible for a conventional dumper to turn round.
Called the Side-Steer Bison, the vehicle is adapted from Barfords' con- ventional Bison two-ton capacity four- wheel drive dumper, has controls so positioned that the operator side- steers. This provides added clearance and full vision during the dumper's
forward and backward traction. The dumper can operate in areas with a head room of only 8 ft and a width of between 7 to 9 ft. It is fitted with headlights both in front and rear, has hydraulically controlled tipping and an exhaust scrubber for reducing the ef- fect of diesel fumes.
