M for mild steel rod

H for high tensile rod

reinforced concrete in cu. yd. and form- work in sq. yd.

If the answer is required in cu. ft. and sq. ft. a similar programme can be used with slight modification without the necessary division for reducing feet to yards.

Programme for rod reinforcements

Here, the taker-off need only to record the total number of rods of a similar dimension and the dimension of the rods. Example of entries by the taker-off for rod reinforcement is as Fig. 4.

The operator will need to enter the weight per foot run of a particular size of the rod and then the number 'N' followed by the length 'L'. The com- puter will immediately respond with answers for the total length of rod, the accumulated total length of rod, ac-

cumulated weight in lbs. and the ac- cumulated weight in tons. All these will take the computer only a split second.

Programming the computer

>

To understand the programming of the Olivetti Programma 101, it must be remembered that any input will im- mediately go into register 'M', Depres- sing the sign will mean the copy- ing of whatever is in register 'M' to register the 'A'. Depressing the '+' sign will mean adding up figures in 'M' and 'A' registers and putting the total in register 'A'.

Similarly, an 'X' sign will mean multiplying the figures in 'M' and 'A' registers and putting the answer in 'A'. The '-' sign will mean the subtracting the figure in 'M' register from the figure in 'A' register and storing the

result in 'A' register. Depressing the '' sign will mean dividing the figure in 'A' register by the figure in 'M' register and storing the result in 'A' register.

}

To send in answers from the 'A' register to any of the storage registers 'B', 'C', 'D', 'E' and 'F', the buttons to be depressed will be the storage regis- ter and the sign meaning the ex- change of whatever figure in the regis ter with whatever figure in the 'A' register. To send a figure from the 'M' register to any of the storage registers, the buttons to be depressed will be the storage register and '' sign.

To illustrate all these points, an explanation of the work of the pro- gramme for squaring cubed items is given in the programming schedule on page 27.

Conclusion

I feel that there is a lot of scope for the use of this mini-computer in the quantity surveying field especially with the lack of workers-up these days. For me, I find the computer so useful that I have committed myself to it and currently I am exploring its further use in other fields besides quantity surveying. It is possible that another set of programmes may be dis covered for use by valuation surveyors.
