AN octagonal auditorium with a dia- meter of 112 ft. 6 in. and a completely column-free interior is the focal point of a new grant-in-aid secondary school built at Morrison Hill. Hong Kong.
Its roof is divided into an eight- sided pyramid, each side being a fold- ed slab vault. Eight square section inclined columns of 36 in x 36 in. sup- port the roof at the valleys and the crests project out 9 ft. The columns are tied together by 12 ft. deep beams, forming a ring.
The apex of the pyramid is rein- forced by a moulded steel plate, 4 in. thick and 9 ft. in diameter; the ad- jacent steel bars of the folded slabs are welded to it. The inclined columns rest on spread footings, each of which is tied to the two adjacent footings as well as being tied to a central ring beam.
Complicated reinforced concrete calculations and equally complex con- struction formwork were required to produce the auditorium but its shape and cost are amply justified. Apart from allowing multi-purpose use, it fits neatly into the eastern extremity of the site, conforming with the boun- dary lines and leaving free the maxi mum of open playground.
