pull-cord, also in the backplate, turns the lamp on and off.

In addition to housing the controls, the backplate of the lamp acts as a pivot base for a cantilevered arm which, in turn, supports a spun-metal lampshade.

Overall dimensions for the back- plate are 8 in. wide by 41⁄2 in. high by 14 in. deep, while the arm, capable of swivelling through 180 deg., projects a maximum of 18 in. from the wall. The lampshade, 91⁄2 in. high by 3% in. in diameter, can be rotated about the end of the rod and fixed in any position up to 20 deg. on either side of the horizontal.

The stove-enamelled fitting has a two-tone colour scheme. In the standard version, the backplate and the top of the shade are yellow, while the arm and the remainder of the shade are finished in white. Other colours can be supplied to order.

THE functions of microphone bracket and on off switch are com- bined in the Philips 84 dictation machine. The machine is automa- tically switched on as the microphone is lifted from the bracket, and switch- ed off when it is replaced.

The dark-grey methacrylate cabinet of this latest model measures 8 in. deep by 3 in. high by 11 in. wide. while the retractable microphone bracket extends another 2 in. The tapes are enclosed in 21⁄4 in. square transparent plastic casettes and are in- serted under a hinged, transparent cover to give a dictating time of 20 min. per side. A red pointer traverses
