The underside of the floor at base- ment level is also insulated.

Reduction of noise transmission from storey to storey can be achieved by means of anti-vibration joints be- tween the load-bearing components and the surface of the floors.

Substructure

Basements are prefabricated. like the remainder of the building, and for the foundations Balency have develop- ed what is virtually an industrialised method of construction, embodying a system of continuous trenches, when- ever the characteristics of the soil al- low this type of foundation.

A small mechanical shovel, or ex- cavator, digs a narrow trench down to the load bearing soil. The excava- tor is followed at a short distance by a truck-mixer which fills the trench with concrete before the walls have time to cave in.
