The shield is made of double panes of glass for insulation and is heated in winter by a standard hot-house boiler unit. There is a standard thermostat- controlled ventilation system.

The Rasmussens claim that the traditional idea of a house as a fixed, un- changing structure must be abandon-

ed. Their plan, they say, comes closer to the mass-produced goods turned out by industry, such as cars and re- frigerators they are meant to be used and then discarded.

The first six climate shield houses are now being built in Denmark and will provide their occupants with a

living space area of 240 sq. metres under the shield. Two others based on the idea are to be built in Britain in the near future, and architects in several other countries are working with the Danish architects to adapt the climate shield houses to local condi- tions in their own countries.
