Completed thin wall structure. Hoist used

Conduit for electrical wiring can be fixed into place during the actual pour or grooves can be allowed in the slip- formed wall. Ventilation ducts and other vertical ducts can easily be con- structed by sliding steel tubes which are fixed to beams and suspended in the yokes.

On the pilot scheme at Kwun Tong the total length of wall in the build-

has an adjustable feed

ing was reasonably small in relation to its total area. The walls were slid at a rate of 15 in. per hour, that is I in. every four minutes. This result- ed in the sliding of approximately 31⁄2 storeys a day and the total completion of the five storeys in 34 hours, or a little under 11⁄2 days.

Watched closely by the staff of the Housing Authority and engineers of

Palmer and Turner. respectively de- velopers and architects for the pro- posed 50-storey blocks at Ping Shek, the pilot scheme was considered to be outstandingly successful in respect of both the time of construction and the verticality of the walls.

Verticality on the 50-storey towers would be ensured by the use of plumb bobs within the lift wells, where minimum disturbance from wind is experienced, and also by means of a theodolite mounted on the slip- form platform, taking continuous bearings on adjoining buildings or landmarks as the building rises.

Good Finish

A high standard of finish was achieved on the fair faced concrete, which was hand trowelled and brushed as it came out of the bottom of the form. The finish compares very favourably with that accomplish- ed by more traditional methods of construction elsewhere in the Colony.

On this small experimental scheme there were of course no savings on wall formwork or labour.

The sys- tem becomes economically effective when used on multi-storey construc- tion of 15 floors and over.

It could be used on multi-storey low cost housing throughout Hong Kong with either precast or in situ floors, provided the scheme were de- signed with slipforming in view from the very beginning; that is with uni- form planning throughout the entire height of the building.
