Pilot scheme in Hong Kong a great success

A method of supporting floors on internal walls

Ew world standards for low cost housing in respect of economic construction and speed of completion may soon be set in Hong Kong.

By using the slipforming method of construction, tower residential blocks, such as the 50-storey circular build- ings proposed for the Housing Au- thority's Ping Shek Estate, could be finished at a rate never before achiev- ed by in situ building methods.

A new height record 420 ft. would be established too for a slip- formed building, and wind tunnel experiments are now being conducted at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in England to check the struc- tural stability of towers of the same height and grouping as those proposed at Ping Shek.

In order to give local contractors in Hong Kong the opportunity to ac- quaint themselves with the slipform- ing technique, a pilot scheme was car- ried out in February on a five-storey building at Kwun Tong the Hol- land Hostel.

With slipforming, the correct-degree of control and supervision on site is most important and on this initial trial the operation was entrusted to Australian experts, Concrete Silos Pty. Ltd., of Sydney. The steel formwork was manufactured in Hong Kong by a local firm and was erected on site under the general supervision
