THEIR WORST ENEMIES
"OUR customers still remain their worst enemies”, said Mr. M. J. Newson, outgoing chairman of the Electrical Contractors Association of Hong Kong. Speaking at the Association's second annual dinner last month, he said that despite the publicity given to the misuse of electricity, price continued to be the only factor seriously considered in the majority of tender evalua- tions.
"We all look forward to the day when an independent inspect- ing and advising authority can be appealed to when disputes arise on any electrical installation in the Colony", he said. "Then and only then can we expect the aim of our association, which is to improve electrical work in Hong Kong, to be possible of general implementation."
M. J. Newson
Mr. Newson said that a significant trend in local wiring practice was the increasing use of miniature circuit breakers in domestic and industrial premises. This move, pioneered by the Public Works Department, had now re- ceived fresh impetus from the Fire Department who had considerably tightened their inspection requirements. The Association welcomed these innovations which obviously favoured conscientious and competent electrical contrac-
tors.

The Association's new committee, he stated, was confronted with a specific problem that of payments. Discussions had already been held to devise a plan of action to combat the present situation where payment for electrical work was often delayed well beyond the most generous of deferred periods.
