Model of the NSW State Government office 35-storey skyscraper will soon be as evident on travel posters as the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Costing £A5,761,266, it will accommodate more than 3,000 civil servants at present working in cramped conditions in government departments scattered over the length and breadth of the city.

The building consists of a high-rise 35-storey tower block with each floor projecting 5 ft. beyond the ex- ternal walls, giving a promenade effect to the perimeter of each floor. The entire ground floor will be set aside for pedestrian traffic, allowing walk-through access to the high speed lifts.

Construction comprises a steel framework, with concrete floors on steel decks. Natural lighting of the tower will be primarily from north to south, to avoid troublesome east and west aspects and to reduce heat loads on the air-conditioning plant.

The reinforced-concrete centre core, 40 ft. by 40 ft. which houses the elevators and the service area, was constructed by the slip-form method, rising at the rate of about one floor each week. The outer columns of the tower, which itself will be 107 ft. by 107 ft., will be sheathed in a special rapid-oxidised bronze to give an even weathering.

The recessed windows also are of bronze, with glass coloured bronze-grey to reduce glare. The entire block will have an office area of about 263,000 sq. ft.

A Manhattan Planned in Brussels

THIRTY-THREE groups of 17-storey buildings and tower blocks rising to heights of between 100 and 170 metres are to be erected under a project for reshaping the sur- roundings of the Gare du Nord (North Railway Station) in Brussels.

The Minister of Public Works and the Mayors of the Brussels municipalities have agreed on the scheme which affects an area of 22 hectares. The site is at pre- sent occupied by buildings dating for the most part from the beginning of this century.

It is estimated that the work will cost over 25 mil- liard Belgian francs and can be completed in 15 years.
