Since the posts of Senior Legal Assistant, Senior Assistant Registrar and Treasury Accountant are offset by posts of Legal Assistant, Assistant Registrar and Executive Grade Officer respectively, there are really only 31 additional posts. Of these, 18 are required for new projects and 13 (one secretary stenographer, four clerks/typists, and eight clerical assistants) to cope with the general increase in the work of the Department. The 18 posts for new projects consist of one Assistant Registrar, one clerk, one clerical assistant and one messenger for the Marriage Registry in the Causeway Bay Magistracy expected to open in July next; one Assistant Registrar and one clerical assistant required for the second Marriage Room to be provided in the Mongkok Registry in January, 1961; 3 clerks and one clerical assistant who are to start work on a new Edition of the Street Index in October next; and two new teams each of one Assistant Registrar and three clerks approved by special warrant to deal with the large number of applications for the post registration of births in the New Territories. The supernumerary post of Registrar General has been deleted consequent upon the completion of Mr. W. Aneurin Jones' pre-retirement leave.

The only significant changes in Other Charges Annually Recurrent are in respect of Rent; Stores and Equipment; and Travelling Expenses. The increased provision for Rent is required for additional leased accommodation for new Marriage Registries. Stores and Equipment is a new item. The figure of $7,500 is mainly in respect of materials and ancillary stores for the Photostat Section. The increase in the estimate of Travelling Expenses is to cover the expenses of the two additional teams dealing with the post registration of births in the New Territories.

The Copying Machine included under Special Expenditure is for the copying of marriage certificates at the Marriage Registry in the Supreme Court. The Print Dryer is required to speed up the work of the Photostat Section, and the Safe is for the safe-keeping of documents deposited in the Land Office under the Land Registration Ordinance, (Cap. 128).
