With the increase in the number of Hong Kong students in the United Kingdom the provision for the Amenities Fund for Colonial Students has been increased. Normal promotions and increments, expansion of existing schools and the introduction of further schools under the Grant and Subsidy Codes have necessitated an increase of $5,000,000 in the recurrent subvention to grant and subsidized schools. Normal promotions and increments, and additional staff, have led to the increase of $23,000 in the subvention to the Grant Schools Provident Fund. A subvention of $100,000 is included for the first time for fees for Architects' Certificates on Structural Safety of private school buildings required under the Education Ordinance. The increased number of non-profit making private schools has also necessitated an increase of $50,000 in the subvention towards Rates. The rapid expansion of the aided schools building programme involving extension of existing buildings and erection of new buildings has resulted in an increase of $3,000,000 in building grants and also in an increase of $870,000 in furniture and equipment grants. The subvention of $60,000 to Queen's College Old Boys' Association represents Government's contribution towards the building cost of their Memorial Hall, which will be in the form of an extension to Queen's College.
