Supernumerary Staff

Provision has been made for the salary of a Revenue Inspector on leave prior to retirement, whose post will be filled before his leave ends.

The creation of additional posts, together with normal increments account for the increase of $719,100 in the vote for Personal Emoluments.

Under Other Charges Annually Recurrent, a new item under Expenses of Overseas Offices has been created with a provision of $100,000 as a token figure to meet the cost of establishing the new overseas office in Sydney.

The other main increases are:-

(a) $65,000 for Uniforms and Accoutrements for disciplined staff to meet the initial expenses

on uniforms and accoutrements for additional staff in the Preventive Service;

(b) $60,000 for Trade Promotion Expenses which vote includes provision for the Vienna Trade Fair, another Trade Fair as yet undetermined, exploratory visits to Trade Fairs, and overseas market research and publicity;

(c) $21,000 for the maintenance of additional machines for the computation of trade statistics.

The additional posts of Confidential Assistant and Clerk are required to cope with the increasing volume of office work and the extra Co-operative Society Supervisors are provided to assist the Co-operative Officers in handling the increasing routine work in the New Territories. These changes, together with normal increments, account for the increase of $28,100 in the Personal Emoluments vote.

Under Other Charges Annually Recurrent, additional funds are provided mainly to meet the anticipated increase in electricity consumption in the new District Co-operative Offices in the New Territories and air-conditioning of the senior officers' offices.
