The additional post of scientific officer is provided to replace an Air Ministry fore- caster recently withdrawn from the Observatory. The additional posts of technical officers and computers are required to maintain a twenty-four hour service at Kai Tak, Waglan and Cheung Chau when the new airport is opened. An additional post of clerk is required for stores and library records, and three additional watchmen for the new radar station at Tate's Cairn.
Under Other Charges Annually Recurrent, the increased provision under subhead 2(1) (Fuel, light and power) is due to extra electrical power consumption at the Observatory and at Tate's Cairn. The increased provision in subhead 3 (Cable and Wireless charges) is due to the greater amount of data now being broadcast by other countries.
Under Special Expenditure the provision of $142,000 in subhead 11 is to provide the instruments required when night operations commence at the new airport.
