Former salaries £180 and £140 to £160 respectively. Scales now provided are
those of the corresponding ranks in the Police, it being the policy to make periodical
changes in both appointments. Detective allowances and an allowance in each case for the special work performed have been added to induce the most suitable men to apply.

These changes are the result of a recommendation made by the Subordinate Staff Board to the effect that promotion in the Subordinate Service should as far as possi- ble depend upon merit and seniority, independently of a particular office and to that
end, grades should be made interchangeable between departments.
5 Sanitary Inspectors, (£165 to £225).
Two are new posts, one of which is necessitated by the steady growth of new build- ings and streets and the other to permit of the operation of the Free Passage Scheme
without detriment to the public service.
