In ordinary years Pakhoi's most notable exports are pigs and poultry for the Hongkong market. During the first seven months of 1939 pigs from Pakhoi were in much demand, but later exchange restrictions and the intensification of the blockade cut off all sea trade. Of pigs, 42,507 head were exported as against 40,073, while of poultry, 210,188 head were exported as compared with 22,843. Similarly, the export to Hongkong of firewood increased, as did nutgalls and wood oil, etc.

Supplies of rice were somewhat short, but the import of foreign rice was small.

During the year steam shipping was irregular, with freight and insurance rates high. Total tonnage under General Regulations amounted to 428,010 tons as against 513,901 tons.
