LAPPA

TRADE IN 1939

Despite the fact that Sino-Japanese hostilities continued to create abnormal conditions in the Lappa district, the foreign import and export trade not only survived but increased considerably, the total value of the foreign import trade being $26.6 million as against $3.7 million, while the value of direct exports of Chinese produce was $20.1 million as against $7 million in the preceding year.

Among staple imports showing an increase were cuttle-fish from 17,220 to 35,659 kilogrammes, wheat flour from 13,361 to 121,763 quintals, sulphate of ammonia from 1,833 to 37,488 quintals, kerosene oil from 1,257,447 to 4,373,853 litres, lubricating oil from 14,278 to 457,229 litres, paraffin wax from 28 to 8,222 quintals, and coat from 281 to 14,754 metric tons. Decreases were recorded for bran and rough-hewn ordinary hardwood, which declined to 71,378 quintals and 275 cubic metres from 84,998 quintals and 5,012 cubic metres respectively in 1938.

Due to the disturbed conditions of the country, the exportation of certain kinds of Chinese produce to foreign countries, hitherto passed through either the Canton or Kowloon Customs, was diverted to pass the Lappa Customs. Increases were recorded under pigs (81,687 to 106,290 head), poultry (1,111,748 to 2,735,375 head), fresh oranges (20.069 to 26,073 quintals), other fresh fruits (97,910 to 249,309 quintals), fresh vegetables (168,701 to 489,212 quintals), and firewood (418,836 to 461,811 quintals). It is noteworthy, as an unusual occurrence, that an amount of 51,657 quintals of cassia lignea was exported during the year under review.

The early rice crop was excellent, and the late crop might have been equally good had it not been limited as a consequence of the exodus of population in October. Foreign rice imported through the district during the year 1939 was 222,540 quintals, showing an increase of 205,077 quintals when compared with the figures for 1938.
