4,827 quintals, cotton piece goods from 9,490 to 4,819 quintals, cotton socks and stockings from 78,564 to 36,234 dozens, beancake from 17,596 to 6,065 quintals, matches from 361,622 to 25,007 gross, and coal from 7,117 to 3,526 metric tons.

In foreign exports the trade was much handicapped on account of the extreme uncertainty of supplies. While shipments of joss paper, the principal article, were maintained at a value of $1,170,000 or a gain of 9 per cent over the 1938 figure, oranges dwindled from 34,847 to 13,244 quintals, other fresh fruits from 8,176 to 1,715 quintals, medicated samshu from 1,550 to 276 quintals, black and green tea from $388,000 to $240,000, and paper of all qualities from 2,528 to 1,139 quintals.

The decline in the value of coastal exports from $4.5 million to $2.7 million was indicative of the trend of this trade, which was not unnatural in the face of existing conditions. The slump was especially heavy in sugar, from 115,348 ($2,380,000) to 56,008 quintals ($1,130,000), and the only gain of importance was in fresh oranges, which increased from 49,429 ($496,000) to 66,525 quintals ($800,000).

The total tonnage of shipping entered and cleared under General Regulations was 2,795,015 tons as against 2,535,072 tons in 1938.
