recorded, advanced in value from $391,000 to $791,000, but imports of native sugar, cigarettes, cotton yarn, and cotton piece goods all declined. Exports coastwise of wood oil dwindled to only 3,564 quintals from 103,862 quintals in 1937 and 54,971 quintals in 1938. The total value of raw cotton, cotton yarn, and cotton piece goods exported during the year amounted to over $7 million, or about 70 per cent of the total export trade.

The total number of vessels entered and cleared under General Regulations was 2,361 with an aggregate tonnage of 504,776 tons, as against 2,970 vessels with 1,430,- 168 tons in 1938. The tonnage for Chinese vessels dropped from 923,277 to 351,595 tons, while that for foreign flags had also a decrease of 353,710 tons as compared with 506,891 tons in the preceding year. Conditions on the river remained normal throughout the year, the highest gauge reading at Ichang being 13.17 metres above zero on the 1st August and the lowest 0.48 metre above zero on the 7th February,
