SHASI
Testing Department of Hankow Bureau of Inspection and Testing for Commercial Commodities, a governmental organ, commenced work in October 1929. The Shasi Cotton Weaving and Spinning Factory was informally opened in May 1931 with a capital of $1,000,000. The Bank of China, Shanghai Commercial & Savings Bank and Bank of Communications have branch offices at Shasi, besides a few other banking establishments. The Young Brothers Banking Corporation is the only one having a modern and large building on the main street. A fine new bund, one of the best on the Yangtze, was completed along the Yang Ma Tou section of the waterfront in 1935.
TRADE IN 1939
Owing to numerous adverse factors, the trade of Shasi showed a further decline, the value of the interport trade being as follows: importations of Chinese merchandise, $2.6 million as against $9.5 million; and exportations of Chinese produce, $8. 9 million as against $14.9 million in 1938. Foreign sugar, which, formerly arrived in such large quantities as 10,369 quintals in 1937 and 10,744 quintals in 1936, was absent from the returns for 1938 and amounted to 8 quintals only during the year under review. There was a general falling-off in the importations of Chinese merchandise with the exception of medicinal substances, not otherwise recorded, and of native sugar, the former rising in value from $36,241 in 1938 to $412,660 in 1939 and the latter from 6,033 to 17,416 quintals. Decreases were also recorded in the coastwise exportation of cotton yarn and raw cotton: only $0. 8 million worth of the former was exported during the year as compared with $4 million worth in 1938, while the value of the latter amounted to $4. 5 million as against $5. 8 million. The trade in broad beans, rice and paddy, wheat flour, gunny bags, etc., also registered a decrease. Coastwise shipments of cotton piece goods increased, however, nearly 10 times in quantity, totalling 6,672 quintals in 1939 as against 671 quintals for 1938.
