shipment overseas. The Tai Chi Coal Mining Company, also a Sino-Japanese concern, has, on the other hand, exported 100,000 tons, principally to Japan. Operations of the Yao Hua Glass Company, suspended in October 1938, were resumed at the end of April 1939. Sale conditions varied, demand in North China. being fairly satisfactory and a readjustment taking place to meet requirements in regard to export control for shipments to Shanghai, Central and South China.

Despite interruptions the new bridge over the Luanho on the Peiping-Liaoning Railway was opened to traffic during the year; the Chinwangtao Shanhaikwan motor road was completed, and plans for the contruction of a motor road connecting Chinwangtao with Changli are under consideration.

The number of vessels entered and cleared under General Regulations during the year was 1,852 of an aggregate tonnage of 3,927,441 as compared with 1,773 vessels aggregating 3,532,205 tons in 1938.
