SARAWAK

Shipping entered in the foreign trade in 1939 was 974,543 tons. There is a constabulary consisting of about 1,000 men, principally Dayaks and Malays, under British army officers. Round Kuching are about 45 miles of roads, besides bridle paths. There are 34 post offices.

The Government offices have a telephone system extending over Kuching and upper Sarawak and there is communication by wireless with Singapore, etc. There are also wireless stations at Kuching, Miri, Sibu, Lundu, Mukah, Simanggang, Bintulu, Sarikei, Meluan, Kapit, Limbang, Baram, Saratok, Matu, Balingian, Tatau, Lawas, Selalang and Kanowit. The distance from London is about 8,700 miles. The transit is about 25 to 30 days. Telegrams are sent by wireless from Singapore.

The rainfall during 1939 in Kuching was 163.12 inches, at Bau, in the south-west, 88.93 inches, at Sibu, roughly in the middle of the country, 90.27 inches and at Trusan, in the extreme north-east, 89.22 inches. The greatest fall in any one month was regtistered in January 1939 at Sungei Bawang, where 61.15 inches fell.

There is a Special Commissioner for Sarawak as well as a Government Agent in England whose offices are at Millbank House, Westminster, London, S. W. 1. There is also a Sarawak Pilgrim Officer at Jeddah.
