same level or showing some decline. The most marked shrinkage appeared in kerosene oil and gasoline, the main items of import, which declined from 3,386,009 to 1,838,514 litres and from 2,728,117 to 2,213,215 litres respectively. Wheat flour arrived in greater quantities, totalling for the year 17,784 quintals as against 10,114 quintals. The increasing influx of cigarettes from abroad-from 6,000 to 119,950 five hundreds-was due to the establishment at Hongkong of branch factories of the Yee Tsoong Tobacco Company and the Nanyang Brothers Tobacco Company. As regards coastwise importations, the value of cotton yarn and its products shared more than one-half of the total. Other coastwise imports showing increases were paper, metals and fire- crackers. Reduced importations of rice and paddy reflected the excellent harvests in the neighbouring districts.

Pigs remained the mainstay of the direct export trade. Hides and sesamum seed receded from 4,365 to 3,659 quintals and from 6,439 to 515 quintals respectively. The embargo placed on cattle affected the export trade, no cattle being exported during the year as against 6,446 head in the first eight months of 1937. Under the coastwise exports the trade in dried betelnuts, groundnut oil, dried lichees, melon seeds, sesamum seed and vegetable oil remained as brisk as ever. A striking advance was made in rice and paddy, coastwise exports amounting to 5,000 quintals as against nil during the preceding year. The export coastwise of sugar dropped from 206,247 to 171,109 quintals, the loss of the Tientsin and Shanghai markets being a serious blow to local producers.
