called Hasegawa-cho. In this central part of the city the roads, public buildings and shops can bear favourable comparison with the great towns of Japan proper. Many other roads have been made and widened in different parts of the city, particularly in the vicinity of the new Imperial University, which lies in the north-east and was opened in May, 1926. The work of town-planning, the making of parks and so forth, is pursued regularly each year, though somewhat hampered at present by lack of funds. Lastly, mention must be made of the steep hill of Nansan, which dominates the city to the south, half-way up the slope of which the Japanese have set the great Chosen Shrine, at which Ama-terasu O-mikami, the divine ancestress of the Japanese Imperial family, and the Emperor Meiji, founder of modern Japan, are venerated as national guardian deities. This shrine is approached by a magnificant flight of stone steps, and from the terrace in front of it a splendid panorama of the city outspread below is obtained.

The population of the city was 677,241 at the end of 1936. The number of Europeans and Americans is under 400.
