small junks and rafts, and by carts on the overland routes which usually travel in convoys of some number as in Tonkin. The River scenery between Lungchow and Nanning with its succession of gorges and rapids is well worth seeing but accommo- dation for Europeans on the motor boats is not of a luxurious type though each vessel has one special cabin for official travellers. The climate of the port is damp and very hot for some eight months of the year, but the winter is cold enough to be very pleasantamid such picturesque surroundings.

TRADE IN 1937

The trade of Lungchow ran a normal course during the first six months of the year, but from July onwards adverse factors set in and till the end of the year there were no signs of trade revival. The rice, bean, and groundnut crops were seriously hampered by the wide-spread flood in August. The money market remained tight throughout the year, The statistics of the port, according to value, were as follows: direct foreign imports, $83,000 as against $49,000 in 1936; direct exports of Chinese produce abroad, $296,000 as against $177,000; and domestic trade, $3,498 as against $289. Deducting the value of certain special and non-recurring importations, the figure for foreign imports does not show any appreciable improvement in the trade with French Indo-China, while the increase of $119,000 in the export trade was the result of good demand in foreign markets for antimony ore, which is the outstanding product of the district, and which was exported to the extent of 23,241 quintals through the Maritime Customs stations at Lungpang and Pingmeng during the year. Accurate statistics for goods transported through channels outside Customs control are not available, but, according to information from reliable sources, business done during the year was on a very much diminished scale. The importance of the port as a distributing centre for goods to the neighbouring districts continued to decrease, and during the year no further advance in highway construction or industrial develop- ment of interest was reported. The South-western Aviation Corporation was unable, to maintain its regular air service between Canton and Hanoi via Wuchow, Nanning and Lungchow. Towards the end of the year bandits in the frontier districts were vigorously suppressed, thus removing an impediment to traffic and commerce along the frontier.
