PAKHOI

The export of pigs to Hongkong was also handicapped by infrequency of steamers during the later months of the year when demand in Hongkong was strongest. Gypsum in considerable quantities from near-by districts was exported to Canton for use in the manufacture of cement. No other minerals were exported during the year, the two mines of the Yu Sheng Manganese Ore Mining Company remaining closed.

Total tonnage entered and cleared during the year was 373,071 tons, representing a decrease of 177,737 tons as compared with 1936. The fortnightly French steamer between Haiphong and Hongkong was withdrawn from the Pakhoi run at the opening of the year and the weekly Douglas steamer from Canton, Hongkong, and Hoihow ceased to call after November. The weekly service of Messrs. Butterfield & Swire's Shanghai-Hongkong-Haiphong ships functioned regularly during the first half of the year, but was much interrupted later. The use of national currency increased considerably during the year, and the provincial currency remained close to the fixed rate of $144 Provincial to $100 National. The air service operated by the South-western Aviation Corporation was suspended during the last four months of the year.
