in the province. Motor oils, paper, and sugar also maintained their importance. During the first half of the year reports from all sides indicated profitable trading conditions and, even following the outbreak of hostilities in the northern and central provinces, local traders succeeded in making the best of a bad situation. The out- standing feature was the expanding trend of exports abroad, the more important articles being wood oil, manganese ore, wolfram, and antimony, all of which registered considerable increases. Of wood oil, the total quantity exported was 108, 175 quintals as against 53,858 quintals. Export of manganese ore more than doubled, being 513,860 quintals as compared with 209,854 quintals during 1936. Of wolfram ore some 15,000 quintals were exported, while shipment of antimony ore amounted to 26,000 quintals, showing an increase of 16,000 quintals over the figure for 1936. Of tin ingots, 22,000 quintals were shipped to Hongkong. Such staple exports as live pigs, cattle, and poultry were also in demand. while of cassia liguea, 30,000 quintals were shipped, representing an increase of 8,000 quintals over the figures for the preceding year.
The various mining companies, oil and sugar refineries, whose activities are carried on in co-operation with the Provincial Government, were in full operation during the year. Construction work on roads and railways was energetically pursued. One of the important projects was the taking in hand of the 545-kilometre-long railway connecting Hengchow, in Hunan, with Kweilin, the provincial capital. An automatic telephone system has been installed at Kweilin, and similar establishments are contemplated for Wuchow and Nanning. The waterworks and electric plants in the province are of a high order. Shipping suffered various vicissitudes during the year, such as the temporary closure of the Bocca Tigris passage used by Wuchow- Hongkong vessels, and freights rose considerably. Aviation routes were maintained with fair regularity, the latest line established belonging to the China National Aviation Corporation and operating planes between Hongkong and Chungking, with Wuchow, Kweilin, and Hankow as ports of call.
