from 126,728 quintals in 1936 to 98,208 quintals, wheat flour from 197,037 to 136,264 quintals, rice from 107,189 to 64,959 quintals, beancake from 233,935 to 177,124 quintals, and cotton yarn from 10,831 to 9,966 quintals. In coastwise ex- ports, sugar advanced from 26,222 quintals in 1936 to 31,736 quintals and fresh fruits from 58,916 to 59,932 quintals, but other principal beadings showed marked decreases. The total tonnage of shipping entered and cleared under General Regulations and Inland Waters Steam Navigation Regulations was 3,834,627 tons, or 1,156,185 tons below the 1936 tonnage, due entirely to the Sino-Japan- ese hostilities upsetting steamer schedules and the subsequent suspension of Chinese shipping. All flags suffered excepting the Norwegian and the Swe- dish, the former gaining some 3,500 tons, or 3 per cent, while the latter rose from a nil record in the previous year to 11,404 tons with one entry and one clearance. To meet mercantile needs consequent upon the suspension of sail- ings of Chinese junks and launches after August, the Douglas Lapraik Com- pany occasionally despatch some of their ships on the Hongkong-Swatow-Amoy- Foochow line to run between Amoy, Sanchiangk'ou, and Foochow. It has been many years since a foreign vessel has traded to an inland place at this port under Inland Waters Steam Navigation Regulations. In April the China Merchants Stean Navigation Company placed their s.s. Haiheng on the Amoy-Manila run, and she did very well; but the service had to be suspended in August. Thanks to the energetic quarantine precautions, the port was free from the epidemic of pneumonic plague that broke out in many inland dis- tricts in the vicinity of Amoy and also from cholera that prevailed in other ports. In July a much-needed ferry service was inaugurated between Amoy and Kulangsu.
