from 62,199 to 69,663 quintals, while there was some decline in the export of mats from 1,389,300 to 1,332,000 pieces. With the glosure of Chinhai as a port of shipment, hats, formerly shipped thence to Shanghai, were shipped from Ningpo, 635,804 buntal fibre hats, 743,269 hemp paper hats, 610,588 grass hats, and 17,564 hats of other fibre being exported abroad via Shanghai during the last quarter of the year. The total number of steamers entered and cleared during the year was 1,502, with a total tonnage of 2,196,257, as against 2,068 vessels totalling 2,989,436 tons during 1936, the large decrease in the number of vessels entered and cleared being in large measure due to the suspension of steamers of Chinese nationalities on the outbreak of hostilities. The Ch'ient❜ang River Bridge, formally opened at the beginning of the December, was partially destroyed at the end of the same month.
