TENGYUEH (MOMEIN)
TRADE IN 1936
A489
For 10 successive years Tengyueh has enjoyed good harvests and freedom from banditry. The development of internal communications continues, and the export trade remains in a flourishing condition. Szechuen raw silk, the staple commodity, which is carried by mule caravans for hundreds of miles from the producing districts before it reaches Tengyueh, shows a marked increased over the previous year with a total export of 4,395 quintals valued at $3,516,320, as compared with 3,189 quintals valued at $2,558,379 during 1935. The export trade as a whole was valued at $3.9 million as against $3 million for 1935. The import trade of the port continues to decline, due in large measure to an unfavourable local dollars rupee exchange. The number of mule loads entering the district from abroad, 10,356 for 1936, shows a decrease of 35 per cent as compared with the 1935 total of 16,211 and is less than half the 1934 total of 22,582. The value of the import trade, including a sum of $373,958 representing a special and non-recurring seizure, was $1,044,512. Deducting the figure for this non-recurring receipt, the true value of the import trade stood at $670,554 as compared with $1.6 million for 1935 and $1.8 million for 1934. The former staple im- ports of the district, on which the greater part of the revenuc depended, viz., cotton yarn and raw cotton, were brought in the large quantities than hitherto during the months of November and December, probably owing to the scarcity of yarn on the Shanghai market and its high price. Simultaneously there was a slight appreciation of local dollars in terms of the rupee from about Yunnan $220 to Yunnan $210-Rupees
100.
