Burma and Yunnan. Investigation work, based upon topographical, historical, and political references was commenced in December 1935, but was suspended in April 1936 on the approach of the rainy season. Work has been resumed early in January 1937, and it is expected that before the next rainy season sets in the Commission will have acquitted itself of its task. The question of final delimitation and demarcation, however, is subject to the consideration and approval of the Governments concerned. The local Yunnan paper dollar retained its value of about Y.P. $1,000 St. $100 for the whole year. It rose slightly in the spring and was quoted at 982 in May, but dropped again in the later months of the year. The Hong Kong dollar, on which so many commercial transactions in this district depend, retained also, a steady but slightly declining course, being quoted at 1,090 at the beginning and at 1,020 at the end of the year. This was due to the policy of the Hong Kong financial authorities to avoid any striking difference in value between the, Hong Kong and the standard dollar such as occurred in 1935. The Indo-China piastre-also a very important medium for the business of this district-followed the fortunes of the franc and was devaluated with it by about 30 per cent. In the early part of the year, it stood at between 2,200 and 2,300, but, though rumours were rife for many days, it was not till the 28th September that the local branch of the Banque de l'Indo-Chine suspended its transactions in piastres, reopening a day or so later with a value of 1,500. At this level, with slight variations, it remained for the rest of the year.
