was imported in considerable quantities, an increase of 4,258 quintals being recorded. There was no legitimate importation of foreign sugar. Wheat flour dropped from 7,045 3,541 quintals, its place being taken by the native article. Of coastwise imports, cement led the list, followed by wheat flour, vermicelli, beans, cotton yarn, and cotton piece goods. Native kerosene oil, refined in Canton factories, dropped in value from $434,368 to $337,184, its place being taken by the foreign article from Hong Kong. The general increase in the value of exports reflected more favourable conditions in Hainan. Continued demand in Hong Kong for cattle, pigs, and galangal was responsi- ble for the increase." The tin trade was encouraging, 762 quintals of tin ingots and 1,251 quintals of tin ore being exported as against exports during 1935 of 836 quintals of tin ingots only. Of principal exports coastwise, brown sugar headed the list, follow- ed by dried lichees, betelnuts, melon seeds, leather, and ruber sheets. Extensive plantations of rubber are being established on the island, and, owing to the brisk demand for Hainan rubber, the price increased from $30 to $90 per quintal. During recent years 17 tin mines have been established in the Nodoa district. The question of the development of the island of Hainan is assuming greater importance, projects including improved harbour facilities, the construction of railways, etc., while the Kiungngai Industrial Bureau has continued its efforts towards the more scientific eultivation of rubber, sugar, and coffee. The development of motor roads is proceeding apace.
