WUCHOW
TRADE IN 1936,

A 469
Although threatened with the prospect of civil war during the summer months, the year can yet be recorded as one showing a marked improvement in the export trade and as one of sustained imports in the face of great difficulties. The value statistics as recorded for the trade of Wuchow were as follows direct foreign imports, $7.10 million as compared with $6.40 million direct exports abroad, $13.50 million as against $8.90 million. As regards imports, the fall in value was primarily occasioned by the low purchasing value of the provincial currency during the period of political tension from June to September, a noticeable improvement taking place. thereafter. The increase in exports was largely due to the increase in volume of articles handled by the Kwangsi Import and Export Syndicate, such as wood oil, aniseed oil, wolfram, manganese, antimony, and tin. Staple exports such as softwood, firewood, cattle, and poultry also enjoyed a fair year. The general improvement in the export trade is attributed to the systematic endeavour on the part of those in charge of pro- vincial affairs to foster and develop the natural resources of the province. The low exchange also proved favourable to purchasers abroad.
.
Road development schemes continue to receive official support. The now complet- ed Changsha Kweilin Road, being interprovincial, is considered of great commercial importance. Shipping experienced another lean year, although there has been no serious falling-off in the tonnage of vessels entered and cleared: Aviation services were well sustained by the South-western Aviation Corporation with extension of the Canton Lungchow line to Hanoi, while the former provincial airway with terminus at Lungchow was changed to a Canton-Nanning line with calls at Wuchow. Liu chow, and Kweilin en route.
