HANGCHOW
Hangchow in their own barges along the canal for payment of duty at Hang- - chow instead of bringing in duty-paid oils by rail as was formerly the case, the oil companies have probably in mind the desire to avoid payment of con- servancy and wharfage due leviable on foreign goods paying duty at Shang- hai. Exports of tea for abroad via Shanghai amounted to 64,403 quintals, showing an increase of 9.544 quintals over the quantity exported during the previous year. The total tonnage of vessels entered and cleared was 78,795 tons as against 69,452 tons in 1935, showing an increase of 13,343 tons, which is mainly due to the more frequent arrivals of barges of the oil companies. The Tsao-o-Hanchow section of the Shanghai-Ningpo Railway is expected to be completed in the autumn of 1937, together with the Chientang River Bridge. The Kashing-Soochow Railway was opened to traffic on the 15th July 1936.
