sundries sent abroad by parcei post; and coastwise exportations of Chinese produce, $5.3 million as compared with $4.5 million for 1935. The import of kerosene oil increased from 31,212,310 to 42,542,109 litres. Formerly Russian oil carried by junks figured to some extent in the local market, but this has gradually fallen off in favour of steamer-borne American and Sumatran oils. An increase in purchasing power also contributed to increased sales. Sugar declined from 144,860 to 132,390 quintals, entries of native sugar taking the place of the foreign product. Similarly, native coal replaced to a great extent imports from French Indo-China, which declined from 18,782 to 9,654 metrič tons only. The importation of tin plates amounted to 11,624 quintals, wheat rank first among staple coastwise exports, 323,443 quintals being exported as against 209,049 quintals in 1935. Forty-five steamers of different nationalities called at Kiangyin-given the status of a "Yangtsze Port of Call" in Novem- ber, 1934--discharging 60,700 metric tons of native coal, of which 1,500 metric.

tons were subsequently re-exported to other ports.
