from 2,726 to 3,481 quintals. Chinese straw braid enjoys a certain popularity in Great Britain, Germany, and France, and business was satisfactory. Exports from Tientsin of mottled straw braid totalled 3,914 quintals valued at $739,314 and of white, straw braid 1,977 quintals valued at $669,957. The total output of the Kailan Mines for the year was reported as being 4,250,000 tons and of the Ching Hsing Mines for the fiscal year from October 1935 to September 1936 882,236 tons. The Chung-fu Coal Mine had a total output of 1,277,114 tons. Factories and Industries fare better during 1936 than for some year past; on the other hand, smuggling of raw materials, especially in the weaving industry, by making production cheaper, created a source of unfair competition. Total tonnage entered and cleared dropped from 5,797,300 to 5,165,247 tons. The British flag continued to head the list, with 1,714,231 tons, followed by Japan with 1,442,589 tons. Chinese-flag vessels fell from 1,294,772 to 1,144,046 tons. The very severe winter at the beginning of 1936 caused the Haiho River to be closed to traffic, due to ice formation; these conditions lasted only three weeks. The permissible draught for vessels remained at 3.96 metres at ordinary high water at Tientsin until the 18th May, when it was increased to 4.27 metres, being decreased again to 3.96 metres on the 30th September. The new Hsiho Bridge was completed in: September at a cost of $600,000.
